In 1988, people with developmental
disabilities were facing long waiting lists for services from the
governmental agencies. This parent-based, grass-roots organization came
together to find innovative solutions. One of our goals has been to
increase community awareness of people who have developmental
disabilities by having them included in all aspects of community life,
(i.e., education, employment, recreation).
During the past 16 years, LEO has:
Sponsored the TALK Theater for all children and adults with special
needs in the Issaquah school district. This is a proactive, instructive
program dealing with the prevention of physical and sexual abuse.
Sponsored speakers to empower informed parents to seek creative
solutions to problems facing people with developmental disabilities.
Had representation on the local special populations recreation
committee, which now has one of the best programs in King County.
Held annual community forums to explore the needs of those with
developmental disabilities in the areas of education, recreation,
employment, and housing. Committees are continually working on the
suggested solutions.
Partnered with the Issaquah Rotary, the Outback Steak House, and
Skiforall to provide a day of fun gravity car racing for 50 children
with special needs. The Outback Steak House serves lunch to 240 family
members and community officials who also help with the race.
Cosponsored a County-wide Housing Conference addressing the needs and
solutions for persons with special needs.
Recognized three Issaquah employers each year for the Employer of the
Year Award, for employing persons with developmental disabilities.
Partnered with Polygon Northwest to build an adult family home in the
heart of Issaquah. The Rose House (pictured in upper-right) opened in
January of 2003.
